How many cubic feet are in a box or container?
Understand the cubic-foot formula, unit conversions, internal measurements, and practical container capacity.
The cubic-foot capacity of a box is found by multiplying its internal length, internal width, and internal height when all three measurements are in feet. The formula is length × width × height. Because the result describes three dimensions, the unit is cubic feet rather than ordinary feet.
If the measurements are in inches, I can either convert each one to feet first or calculate cubic inches and divide by 1,728. For example, a box that is 24 inches by 18 inches by 12 inches measures 2 feet by 1.5 feet by 1 foot, giving 3 cubic feet. Converting before multiplying often makes the place value easier to inspect.
Use internal measurements when estimating how much the container can hold. External dimensions include the walls, lid, handles, and sometimes a rounded corner, so they can overstate usable space. A tapered storage bin is not a perfect rectangular box; its capacity may be estimated with an average width and length, or with the formula for a more suitable solid.
Capacity is not the same as safe packing volume. Fragile items need gaps or protective material, and a liquid container may not be filled to its rim. A box can have three cubic feet of geometric space but accept less once the shape of the contents and weight limit are considered.
