PDF Editor Usability
In this section of the review, I'll focus on the usability of EaseUS PDF Editor, starting with the installation and initial setup, then covering common tasks like splitting PDF documents, securing them with AES 256-bit encryption, and converting them to other formats, including MS Word.
Installing PDF Editor
Installing PDF Editor was very quick and easy, starting with downloading the free trial installer from the EaseUS website (no personal or payment details are required to start the free trial version). The installer, weighing just 21.7 MB, was quick and easy to download. Once running, the installation took just a few moments and a few clicks.
After the installation is complete, you'll be asked to either register the software with a license key or confirm that you want to use the free trial version. At this point, the software will be ready to use!
PDF Editing and Editing
One of the highlights of PDF editing software is that it allows you to easily open a PDF document and edit it as if you were working on it in a word processing application like Microsoft Word.
The good thing is that PDF Editor doesn't disappoint here. Simply open a PDF document, click the "Edit" button on the main app menu (as mentioned above), and then start typing text wherever you want! The "Content Editing" menu (which will open on the right at this point) contains all the commonly used editing tools, such as font changes and tools for inserting new images into your PDF document.
After any editing is complete, we have a few options for what to do next. Of course, we can save the PDF without changing the format, and any changes will remain in the PDF document. Additionally, we have the option to convert to one of several commonly used office formats, including Word (docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.ppt), and image files like JPG.
As can be seen above, converting our edited document is as easy as selecting the desired format from the Convert menu (which can be seen below) and then telling the app where to save the new file (the original PDF will remain intact if you don't save over it!).
Inserting, Extracting, and Merging PDF Documents
In addition to the main editing and conversion functions, PDF Editor also allows you to insert, extract, split, and merge other PDF files into the document you're actively working on.
Most of these functions can be accessed through the "Pages" menu, which, when clicked, will open a new menu on the right side of the screen that provides access to all these tools.
The “Insert From File” tool allows you to select one or more pages from other PDF documents and import them into the current document you're working on. We also have the option to easily insert blank pages, if needed.
The Extract and Delete tools also allow you to extract and/or delete pages from an existing document. When extracting, we have the option to extract one or more pages and export them all at once to a new document, or alternatively, by ticking a box, we can create multiple single-page documents from the export. We can also specify a series of pages to be deleted from the document or delete pages during the export process.
Finally, we have the “Split Document” tool, which makes splitting a PDF document a quick and easy process. This splitting can be done based on a set number of pages or a fixed file size for each split document (this is especially useful if the document needs to be burned to fixed-size media like CDs/DVDs).
Securing PDF Documents
One of the most useful aspects of PDF editing software is its ability to help secure documents. This can be done in a variety of ways, including encryption, print protection, and adding watermarks to pages.
EaseUS has not only ensured that all of this functionality is present in the PDF editor, but it's also easy to use and (most importantly) has made it very easy to assess the existing security associated with a document.
As shown in the screenshot above, on the Document Properties page and then in the Security tab, we view the current protection status of our document. From here, we can quickly see whether printing, copying content, editing, extracting pages, and other methods are enabled or password-protected.
Changing the "Security Method" drop-down box to "Password Encryption" will open a new page where we can set encryption for the document and then enable or disable these security features.
As seen above, we have the option to password-protect our document and select the encryption level (up to AES 256-bit encryption). Once the password is set, we can specify which other security features should be enabled using two drop-down menus.
PDF Editor Security
One of the biggest reasons to use PDF documents is that they can easily add a layer of security to any document. EaseUS took PDF security options very seriously when developing their PDF editor, and they not only support several excellent features but also allow you to set strong AES 256-bit encryption for any document.
Other security features, such as making PDF documents read-only and disabling users' ability to copy or print certain content, are also available and easy to use. EaseUS has also made it very easy to view the current security status of any document with a dedicated Security Properties page.
EaseUS Support
EaseUS has a very good support portal on its main website, offering user guides, a good collection of help documents, and easy access to direct support, if needed.
If you need to contact the EaseUS support team, the support portal has a support email address or instant live chat option, which is great to see (although it's not 24/7).
